A small condominium of 16 apartments with a very elegant architecture and a clean design, which brings an industrial language from the existing structure but in balance with the surrounding architecture.
Apartments from one to four bedrooms distributed over 4 blocks open onto a pateo with a swimming pool in the center and a common protected and intimate garden. A highly functional project with high housing quality.
Teresa Nunes da Ponte
I have been fortunate to do projects for spaces or sets for public use, where I would like to contribute to the well-being of all those who benefit from them. The same goes for the projects for living; we make them, in the studio, so that people enjoy living there. I believe that only the quality of the architecture facilitates a qualified inhabitation.
This project seems to be a hybrid, between an apartment complex and a housing complex. How would you classify it? What will be the predominant living experience?
The proximity of the River and the presence of the Cordoaria and palatial and bourgeois architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries, along with the simple houses of modest stonework, constitute the quality and richness of this urban environment. Inside the condominium, the garden completes this diversity and determines the living experience of the complex.
Although not all homes have a private garden, all enjoy a common green space, protected and intimate, which determines the living experience of the complex. We can enter the house through the garden, or use it both for reading in the shade of a tree, or for children's play on the lawn or in the pool. We can also just look at it through the large openings, in the seclusion of our homes.
[...] a dialogue with the site's industrial memory, returning it to the location through the project and construction, however with an expression we wanted to be markedly contemporary and with a clean design.
How do you feel about the architect's responsibility as a modifier of the urban landscape? Situated in an area of such urban and architectural importance, was this project a challenge?
I feel a great responsibility. I see architecture as a service. With its tools, the architect can create beauty and spaces that provide good experiences, enhance the urban or rural landscape, and the environment in which it is located.
This project is located in one of the historical areas of the City, an area with a great diversity of typologies and architectural styles, a set of enormous aesthetic and urban quality. In times past, one of the city's exits to Belém and the west, occupied by palaces and their dependencies from the 17th century, saw the birth of the Cordoaria in the mid-18th century and has witnessed a qualified development of the urban fabric and architecture.
To intervene in this place means great respect for what is already there, the search for the best form and the best formal expression, engaging in a dialogue with a street front that makes the transition from the old Junqueira to modernist occupation.
